The Akron Beacon says in 1942, Dorothy Liggett was a few weeks away from graduating from her high school in Ohio...

...but when the school found out she was married, she was expelled.

School rules stated married students would be expelled and Liggett was denied a degree.

Her daughter wrote Akron Superintendent David James about her mother being denied a diploma saying she was a good student throughout her time in high school.

So, in early March, he hand delivered her diploma to her home as part of a surprise ceremony.
