The Musical Masterpiece Society is the European branch of the American-based Concert Hall Society.The label was not allowed to use the word Masterworks, because Columbia already released a Masterworks Series. Therefore the word Masterworks was changed to Masterpiece.

Walter Goehr (Berlin, 28.02.1903 - Sheffield, 04.12.1960): German conductor and composer, pupil of Arnold Schoenberg.

Conducted at the Berlin radio from 1925-1932. A radio opera of his, Malpopita, became popular in 1931.

He was fired in 1932 for being Jewish.

Emigrated to England in 1933, initially used as professional name George Walter.

1933-1939: director of the Columbia Gramophone Company

1943-1960: conductor of choir and orchestra of London's Morley College

1945-1948: conductor of the BBC Theatre Orchestra.

He recorded 78t.records for HMV (including Bizet symphony in C), Columbia (including trumpet concerto of Haydn, piano concerto no.1 by Mendelssohn with Ania Dorfmann) and Parlophon-Odeon (including piano concerto KV 456 by Mozart with Lili Kraus).

After 1950 Walter Goehr made many recordings for the Musical Masterpiece Society (MMS).

In my opinion the recording sounded better in mono, so I decided to reproduce the recording in mono instead of the Concert Hall "Synchro Stereo".
