Summary

A few years before James E. Talmage was called to serve as an apostle for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (also known as the "Mormon" church), he gave a series of lectures at universities such as the University of Michigan and Cornell, describing the history of the Church. These lectures were later compiled and published as 'The Story of "Mormonism."' It is a concise, yet informative summary for all interested in learning the history and beliefs of the "Mormon" church. - Cherry picking history

While this is considered a short history, it is extremely "white-washed" in the approach taken. I understand that it is supposed to be a "short" history, but the author definitely cherry picks out only those things he wants, and skips over anything that would look bad on the Mormon church.

- A Scholarly Look at Early Mormon History

This short history of the Mormon Church is written from a scholarly point of view and specifically seems to answer critics by addressing some of the controversial incidents in the Church's history. The history covers the time from Joseph Smith through the establishment of the Church in the Salt Lake Valley. The reader and audio quality are fair and decent enough to listen to.
